CALVERLEY HOUSE

TUNBRIDGE WELLS

Building a new community

In 1684, Viscount Purbeck’s widow, Margaret, also known as ‘The Princess of Babylon’ for her love of fashion and dancing, provided land on Mount Sion for the earliest lodging houses and ground at the north end of the Pantiles, where the Church of King Charles the Martyr was later built. And so began the development of this elegant and fashionable town.

Visitors who had come to ‘take the waters’ required a place for worship and generously donated a substantial amount of money so that a church could be built. Sir Christopher Wren sent his chief plasterer, Henry Doogood, to create its magnificent ceiling. It was here that Princess Victoria attended church services with her mother, the Duchess of Kent.

From 1800 the town grew rapidly. With the cost of living cheaper than in London and stage coaches providing a reliable service, it was now possible to travel between London and Tunbridge Wells in only five hours!

Entertainment for residents and visitors took place on the Common including firework displays, cricket matches, archery and horse racing. In 1750 Lady Coke wrote to her friend Mrs Eyre describing a typical day in Tunbridge Wells: “The outward amusements are cricketing, horse races and other diversions, such as walking, riding and airing in carriages.”

In 1909 King Edward VII officially recognised the popularity of Tunbridge Wells with its many royal and aristocratic visitors - including his mother, Queen Victoria - over the centuries by granting the town its ‘Royal’ prefix.

Today, Royal Tunbridge Wells, or Tunbridge Wells as it is more commonly called, remains a popular place to live and to visit as it retains much of its original charm and elegance.

A HISTORY OF TUNBRIDGE WELLS

AN AREA OF OUTSTANDING BEAUTY

More than 70 per cent of the Borough of Tunbridge Wells lies within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Mainly formed during the fourteenth century, and altered little since, the Kent High Weald is considered to be one of the best surviving medieval landscapes in Northern Europe. Hilly sandstone terrain and a heavy clay soil have caused the High Weald countryside to remain largely unaffected by modern forms of agriculture.

The area is characterised by rolling hills, scattered farmsteads, small irregular-shaped fields, ancient woodland, and historic routeways. In 1983 the High Weald was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, allowing for increased conservation and enhancement of this important landscape.

There is always plenty to do in Tunbridge Wells with a wealth of leisure pursuits and beautiful countryside to explore on your doorstep.

With a Help to Buy: Equity Loan the Government lends you up to 20% of the cost of your newly built home, so you’ll only need a 5% cash deposit and a 75% mortgage to make up the rest.

You won’t be charged loan fees on the 20% loan for the first five years of owning your home.

If the home in the example above sold for £210,000, you’d get £168,000 (80%, from your mortgage and the cash deposit) and you’d pay back £42,000 on the loan (20%). You’d need to pay off your mortgage with your share of the money.

For more information (including advice on fees and paying back your loan) please download the Help to Buy buyers’ guide (PDF).
